The Exposure Marine X1 – for smart crewing at night

Following the successful launch in 2012 of their compact searchlights, Exposure Marine have developed the X1, a very lightweight double-ended torch, with three optimised night vision (‘ONV’) modes for on deck working, navigation and maintenance, without disturbing your fellow crew members.

Weighing just 86 grams and only 117 x 31mm, the compact little X1 is packed with the latest smart LED technology, drawn from Exposure’s pedigree mountain and road bike lights.

With a focus on both racing and safety, the X1 has three white outputs; a 320 lumens high power search mode, an endurance working mode, and a low beam close range mode, with burn times of two, seven and twenty hours respectively.

The secondary 1.5 lumens red output, which is ideal for protecting your, and other crew members, night vision whilst working on deck, boasts impressive burn times of 24 hours on high beam, 36 hours on medium beam and 72 hours on low beam.

An integral white Strobe and SOS mode, in a waterproof IPX8 rated, buoyant,  marine grade anodised casing, makes the X1 the must have personal safety torch to keep with you at all times.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Skipper, Ian Walker says “having been extensively involved with the long term testing of the X1 in the last Volvo Ocean Race, it was always the first object picked up when heading on to deck at night.  I feel it is an essential piece of personal safety equipment, alongside your lifejacket and EPIRB when sailing at night.”

When switching on to either mode, the light builds in a stepped change from low to maximum output over two seconds, giving your eyes time to acclimatise and preventing the helmsman’s nightmare of a sudden bright white light destroying your night vision.  A press and hold ‘momentary switch’ allows instant output, which will extinguish after one minute to prevent accidental activation.

Whilst it rarely needs recharging, the X1 comes with an integrated rechargeable battery with USB adaptor, colour coded fuel level indicators, and a glowing ‘locator’ LED button, to make it easy to find in the pitch dark.

Retailing at £150, the X1 is supplied with a reflective neck lanyard, storage case, USB cable, 240V charger and charging holster.   It is bracket compatible, making it highly versatile as an onboard light and fits to accessories including Magni-grips, suction and adhesive mounts for helmet mounting capabilities.

Exposure’s X2 searchlight endorsed by the Norwegian Sea Rescue Association

Redningsselskapet, the Norwegian Sea Rescue Association (NSRA) has recommended the co-branded Exposure Marine X2 search light for the professional and recreational marine market, adding it to their existing range of recommended safety equipment.

The NSRA, Norway’s equivalent to the British based RNLI, is a voluntary, membership-based organisation that aims to save lives and protect the environment, runs a fleet of high speed rescue craft based at 57 stations along the Norwegian coast. The X2 is to be used and tested throughout the fleet.

Operating in near arctic conditions, man overboard (MOB) and rescue situations become ever more life threatening due to the cold.   The NSRA chose the X2 due to its MOB related features, including a brilliant 700 lumens searchlight, as well as its high-powered SOS and Strobe facility easily visible from over 3 nautical miles.  Encased in a lightweight, buoyant and compact aluminum torch housing, the X2 is also an ideal personal safety aid, which can illuminate a significant area when held underwater or shone on a sail.

Following their initial testing, the NSRA have decided that the X2 is the most efficient and versatile marine safety torch available, and are particularly focused on increasing safety for all boat users.  The multiple strength red beam options, which protect your night vision, were also seen as a unique advantage and were fundamental to the NSRA choosing the Exposure X2.

As a result of the NRSA recommending this powerful little flashlight to all boat owners, the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (KNS) has specified that 700 lumens strength lights are now mandatory safety equipment for the prestigious Færder Race 2013 (Færderseilasen).  The race is the world’s largest overnight regatta, with more than 1100 boats taking part racing from Oslo, south to the Færder lighthouse and back to Horten.  This spectacular race has grown immensely, both in popularity and participation, since its inception in 1947.

The NSRA will be recommending and retailing the co-branded X2 flashlight throughout Norway via their website http://www.redningsselskapet.no/profflykt

The X2 named in the Top 10 essential bits of kit for 2013

“At £200 the X2 torch might seem a tad expensive but it is in our view the best torch money can buy. With 700 Lumens, a white and red light setting and LEDs for long battery life, the X2 should be the only torch you’ll ever need.”

‘The canoeists Everest’

Congratulation to the guys at ‘Stiff Upper Lip’ on completing the Devizes to Westminster kayak challenge an incredible feat in itself, whilst also raising £1000 for ParkinsonUK. They review the experience below:

“The light was ammmmazing and simply a life saver!!! We successfully completed the ‘Devizes toWestminster125mile international kayak challenge’ in 24.45hr non-stop. In truth it was one of the hardest things that we have ever undertaken. The severe cold, strong head winds and extremely high levels of flow on the River Thames combined with having the temperature drop to -4degrees overnight made our water bottles and boat completely freeze over with many cases of suspected hypothermia being reported and around 30 percent of the 450 entries failing to complete the course.

As a team of two we suffered prolonged times of cramp and backache throughout the race and after completion we are plagues both now suffering with bad backs and handfuls of blisters,  sore bums and frostbite! As a reminder: The race begins in Devizes, a small market town in the English county of Wiltshire, and heads along the narrow Kennet & Avon Canal to Reading where the course joins the Thames and heads to central London including 77 portages where we had to get out and carry the boat around locks and bridges. The race is believed to be the longest non-stop canoe race in the world and has run for almost 65 years, finishing at Westminster bridge, opposite the Houses of Parliament, being dubbed by many as ‘the canoeist’s Everest’.

Race director Tom Armistead said : Often, it’s a challenge just to complete the course – and that was very much the case this year.”

Thankfully we are on target to raise around £1000 for ParkinsonsUK and sponsorship is still being received via online sponsorship page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=tsul

Many thanks once again as without it we would have been quite simply lost in the darkness!”

Exposure Marine at Mike Goldings Home Coming Celebration

Last Friday Tom Harrop, Exposure Marines Brand Manager, was able to meet Mike Golding again at his home coming reception at Royal Southampton Yacht Club.

It was a great opportunity to hear about some of the conundrums he had to solve and the startling truth that he would rarely sleep longer then 45 minutes, and never longer than an hour for the hole race.

Tom proudly presented him with a personalised X2 which commemorates his latest achievement.
